Meeting a random stranger
In today's class, we were assigned an interesting activity by our lecturer as a way of gaining experience on how to approach people for access to their deepest stories in order to create a compelling documentary. We were each assigned to go and approach a random stranger to discuss their lives.
I met a guy named Arman who is 19 years old and from Iran. I wasn't able to delve deep into any significant stories however I was able to get a much better idea as to the type of person he is form just one brief sitting. I had found out that he had moved to Dubai with his parents 15 years ago from Iran to have a better life. He currently studies mechanical engineering and the university of Wol&gong, however he has aspirations to transfer to Australia so that he can later on marry there and get the passport by staying five years.
Arman has many hobbies, the main one, being that he is a gaming fanatic, is playing video games such as Fifa and Call of Duty. As well as enjoying his favourite genre of action movies every Thursday. Every Friday Arman also enjoys going to the desert with friends and drive around the sand pits in a 4x4 car. One of those Fridays he and his friends once got stuck in the sand and had to call over people to help pull the car out of the sand, which was still a fun experience to him.
Arman doesn't just enjoy the game of football through his video game console, but also occasionally plays it for real with his friends, and is a die hard fan of Real Madrid, he wishes to one day travel the world and visit Spain to watch his favourite team play live.
When it comes to food, Arman is a big lover of seafood, he and his father alike, and will at times go out together for a delicious seafood feast. However he does not get to enjoy his seafood at home as his mother is not as big of a fan.
Ultimately, Arman's dreams and aspirations are to become a university professor and pass on the knowledge and he has accumulated and will continue to accumulate to the younger generation in the future.
I had learned that Arman is a person that enjoys structure in his life, many of the things he enjoys has a specific day for them, I also feel that he is a shy person at heart however once getting to know him, very friendly and enjoys opening up about his life and dreams to another person. Overall this was a great experience in order prepare for our documentaries this trimester, and I have gained a lot more confidence in approaching people and finding the right story that works.
