Has technology eroded the craft of film storytelling?
I believe that in some ways, technology has taken away from films with a pure narrative that may not use all the newest technologies such as 3D, 4D, IMAX experiences etc. Many people today are instantly drawn towards a film that is of better technology such as surround sound, a larger screen, and are forgetting the the true beauty in cinema, narrative.
As a filmmaker, I feel as though I would carry a responsibility to bring back films that carried real and pure, raw meaning back to cinemas. Where technology would not be the key factor in the success of the film, although I am personally keeping up with all the latest in technologies of course, in order to achieve the best quality footage and sound when it comes to those aspects as Charles Matthau explains the postive effect technology has had in film, saying "Technology’s greatest impact is perhaps felt in new cameras that allow cinematographers to shoot in a higher definition, letting viewers take in more of the amazing work in set design" (Matthau, 2017). However I have always felt that narrative should trump all and be the key factor in the rise of any film.
On the other side, without the constant advancements in technologies quality of cinema would remain at a low level with many limitations, the advancements made such as virtual reality, depth sensors, CGI, all the different types of cinema experiences that I mentioned previously, or even being able to watch films on our mobile phones, tablets, and computers. Technology has allowed for films to establish an incredible to reach to everyone world wide. I personally think the pro's outweigh the con's however I would not rely on the technology advancements if I were to shoot my own film, and focus more on the narrative.
